Gaming Conventions

Hi grandkids, gamers, and viewers!

Recently returned from a gamers convention in Owensboro, KY.  I must admit that I was afraid to go.
Why? Because I'm 81 years old and I knew they would all be young! I was afraid no one would know me from my YouTube channel, and that OMGcon would be sorry they invited me!

But man was I wrong! There were so many young people coming up to me asking if I was "Grandma Shirley"  or  "The Gaming Grandma", and telling me that they watch my channel!!  Actually some of the other 'guests' knew me.  And,  I was surprised to see some other older gamers there!!

The most fun for me was when I did my "Panel",  which is just me, a mic, and a bottle of water. LOL
AND   everyone one sitting out in front of me. We just chatted back and forth...me just talking and them asking questions etc.  It was so much fun!

Here's a funny picture for you:

Actually this wasn't my first convention. I went to my first one..PAXEast in Boston...in March.
That was a lot of fun also, and I met a lot of gamers that I follow all the time on their YT channel.
I really was excited about that!!

Here's you a picture from that convention:
He was really that tall, and very nice!

These gaming conventions are fun but very tiring also! But I always enjoy my stays in hotels wherever I travel to, although the beds and pillows are usually too hard.  But I like being waited on and eating out.  The plane rides are mostly always enjoyable.

Oh, coming back there was the coolest rainbow not too far out from the window of the plane. It was in a misty atmosphere and it looked like..if you could be out there....you could walk around inside of it! Coolest thing I've ever seen!
I tried to take a picture of it but it does not do the real thing justice.

Well, as usual, I've talked long enough!

    3. Oh that's good! I went and checked them all and they were correct except the one on YT, which was the one he had tried! lol

  2. Hi Shirley, love your channel - Just to let you know, you put the wrong URL on your channel so people won't be taken to this page when they click it.

Hope all is well, keep up the awesome videos, I've literally watched them all, listening to your voice whilst I'm gaming is relaxing. Thanks for being awesome, keep shooting those bandits in the knee. :D

    1. I'm happy to hear that you've watched them all!! That's a lot! lol Was it on my YouTube channel that the URL is wrong? I hope it isn't on Twitter and FB too!!! How did you get here then!

    2. I'm not sure about your Twitter and FB, the one on your YouTube is, I just figured our the URL so I corrected it. :) It's "Theoldergame" rather than "theoldergamer". Hope that helps!

  4. I'm very happy to know you're getting lots of recognition. I've been seeing your videos for around 6 months now and I must say I enjoy your Skyrim videos the most. I love your passion and enthusiasm towards gaming and life itself.

Keep all the good work and have a nice day!

  5. Thank you for coming by here, and for your nice comment. I love Skyrim, that's why you like those videos best. I can play better in a game I love. I'm really disillusioned with ESO Morrowind! So I'm not having any fun there.

  6. Hi Shirley, Love your videos. I share your love of Skyrim. I've not played ESO but I'm not a Multiplayer gamer so I don't think I would enjoy it either.

  8. Nice to see you blogging, Shirley. I love my blog and it's a good outlet. And another way for you to connect with us fans! I have been curious about how you feel about various things, like first person v. third person in video games, (you don't seem to like it when it switches in Skyrim), multiplayer gaming, and the new Morrowind. I think your gaming blog will be very popular! - Anita F., from up the road in Troutville.

    1. Hi Anita! You're right about third/first person views in games. Once in awhile I like to see my character, just to remember what they look like lol. But play the game and actually 'be' there I want to not see my character. I want to feel like I'm looking out of my own eyes. And I hate it when she slips in and out like she does so many times! I guess I'm doing it but it doesn't seem like I have done anything to make her do that. I know I can scroll my mouse wheel up and down to do that but at those times I don't feel like I have, so that's why it frustrates me.
I hope people will like my blog. I love to talk to people, but I enjoy it when they talk back with me. lol
If I ever get around to having a 'Meet and Greet' here in Rocky Mount do you live close enough that you could come? I would make it on a Saturday sometime before school starts again.

    2. I'm about 1.5 hrs from you. I'd love to come if you do that. I don't have any friends who play video games so it would be fun to meet other folks who enjoy them. I've been playing since Pong came out on an Atari!
I prefer the first person viewpoint, too. It is one of the things I really like about the Elder Scrolls games.

    3. I'm glad you're so close! When I do this, I will announce it here, on Twitter, FaceBook and YouTube. More than once! :)

I too live in Virginia. I'm very interested in trying to get a meet up with some of us gals.
@countrydew....I also grew up on long and Atari!

    5. All last year I was going to have a meet-n-greet here in Rocky Mount with those who live close enough to drive here, and never got it done...I will try to make definite plans this year!! For sure! I would love to meet the two of you. :)

  9. Oh, it's really wonderful to read about your time at the convention(s). Thank you for creating this blog and sharing it with us. :) I wish I could have come to the convention to see your panel and maybe get to meet you - but I guess the way all the way from Germany sadly is a bit too far. But that's why I love YouTube and blogs, Twitter, etc. That way I still get to watch your amazing Gaming videos, Vlogs and everything else. :)

Thank you for everything you do for us!

  13. Hi, Shirley! This is Gail aka Spiritika Starbreeze on YT. I saw the link you posted on your YouTube channel so came to check out your new blog. It seems like a great way for you and your viewers to connect. :)
It looks like you had a lot of fun at the gaming conventions. I've enjoyed seeing the pictures and slideshows you've shared with us. It really gave us a feel for some of what you experienced. The cosplay costumes are so intricately detailed and creative! It was fun seeing you pictured with some of the cosplayers.
Like Anita, I'm also "just up the road." I'm about an hour and a half away in Lynchburg. *waves to Anita and Shirley*

I didn't mean to remove my previous comments but was trying to edit them. I was trying to figure out how to edit them so I could add a profile picture and finally figured out how to add a profile picture. Technology can be so confusing!

    1. I agree that technology can be confusing!! lol There are lots of things I try to figure out how to do that doesn't work for me. Thanks for commenting, and enjoying. I promise it isn't all going to be about conventions though. I just like to talk to all of you, and I will be rambling on about different things. To me it's like keeping a diary only public instead of under lock and key! lol.
As Soon as I saw the picture you got posted I knew it was you! I hope we will be chatting about other things, on here. It won't be daily though cause I simply don't have the time. I loved writing in my old Blogs. Glad you're here!

  16. Hi Shirley! I, too, am a gaming grandma and was delighted to find your videos about a month ago. But you sure put me in my place. I'm only 74 and it never occurred to me to record/post my gaming. Nor have I ever been to a gaming convention.

Skyrim is one of my favorites; I played through the first release and have the newer one on hand. My son hooked me on gaming when Everquest came out (1999?) and I've been gaming ever since -- mostly RPGs and shooters.

I've blogged some about my gaming on PiedType.com (I don't do social media or I might have found you sooner). I'd suggest a Gaming Grandmas Guild if we were playing the same games, but I'm on Xbox. In any case, keep on gaming. I'm convinced it keeps us young (and my grandson insists it makes me the coolest grandma in town).

    1. Thank you for coming here and letting me hear from you!!! :) My subscribers talked me into recording, and my son showed me about gaming in the mid '90's! He also talked me into going to gaming conventions. They are tiring, but so much fun!!! Hope you come back here again, and enjoy any other blogs. I shall look at your PiedType.com also. :)
